This year is the 50th anniversary of American Racing Custom Wheels. American Racing vintage wheel collection consist of 27 different custom wheel designs. If you have ever been to the American Racing web site, then we are sure you noticed the distinctive vintage styling of their “Torq-Thrust” custom wheels.

American Racing’s Torq-Thrust Original Series 309 is a 1-piece painted/machined alloy custom rim that has been around for a long time. In 1956 this wheel started a trend with American hot rod and muscle car enthusiast. The original magnesium five spoke American Racing Torq-Thrust with its unique tapered curve form spoke design is considered by many to be the most famous custom wheel of all time and one that changed world of racing on the strip and the street.

However, not all of the innovative technology and attention to detail is obvious at first glance. This five spoked American Racing wheel was accepted on the drag strip by increased brake cooling and was much lighter and stronger than stock steel wheels. This “mag” wheel, as they were called in the 1960s, went from the strip to the streets and started the custom wheel trend of the 1960s and 1970s. Everyone notices a nice car with custom wheels. There are currently over 1000 different companies offering custom wheels and it can get very confusing trying to make a decision. To top it all off you have to decide on tire diameter, tire width, rim diameter and rim width are all important factors.

Budget plays a big part in the decision as wheel prices vary in cost and quality. Steel, chrome, aluminum etc Going to a wheel website from a Google search will allow different wheels and pictures of them but first you need to know what your sizing will be and what your vehicle limitations are. Seeing a few pictures of your specific model car or truck with a set of wheels and tires fitted the way you like can help. Try getting in touch with the owner if the sizes are not listed as this will free up your time and allow you to make a decision much quicker.

Once you know the sizes that look and or actually fit your Car Restoration project you can select wheels that will fit your vehicle. It is time consuming for that just right look but if you drop off your car and simply tell the tire place to put the best they can on it chances are they will not make a good decision. It costs a lot of money so you need to be sure.

On the Auto Restoration projects we build we always use an offset tool available from Summit racing to check fit and clearance before hand thus eliminating the need to send wheels and tires back with restock charges. Some wheels are not even returnable.
